SWITCH City of the Future

For a brief introduction to Integrated Urban Water Management, see this short video produced by the SWITCH project.

Target audience

The SWITCH Training Kit website is aimed at water managers, urban planners and engineers from local governments and water, wastewater and drainage utilities. The website also contains material for trainers, who may use these in workshops for the staff of a particular city and/or water utility. However, all of the information on this website is also useful for independent reading.


The SWITCH project (2006-2011) aimed to achieve more sustainable urban water management in the “City of the Future”. A consortium of 33 partner organisations from 15 countries led by UNESCO-IHE worked on innovative scientific, technological and socio-economic solutions with the aim of encouraging widespread uptake around the world.

UNESCO-IHE, on behalf of the SWITCH Consortium and European Union, won the IWA's Sustainability Award 2012 for 'innovation in the practical realization of sustainable urban water management'. The award was presented by IWA President, Glenn Daigger to Carol Howe (SWITCH Project Manager) at the IWA Biennial World Water Congress in Busan, Korea on 18 September 2012.
